Thoughts on Gardening, cooking, etc.

i have been going going going, kind of like the energizer bunny. Today i spent sometime taking stock of how things are going. we have been clearing land, my contribution has been the building of several large brush piles. Tomorrow we burn them if the weather is good. i have been laying out and making garden beds, planning where to put all the plants that currently line every window in the house. We have started lots of things, 11 varieties of tomatos, 2 types of peppers.

We really have made a lot of progress, sometimes it's hard to realize it. I noticed it when I was contemplating the pile of metal junk that I have been digging up in the yard.

We have been reading Christopher Alexanders "A Pattern Language" lately, and are using it as a guide to making decisions about the house and the land we live in.

One of my frustration relief projects has been land clearing. it's easy, gets those destructive tendancies a channel and eventually leads to more garden space. Work has been very frustrating lately and i have chopped and hacked at enough to the weed trees and blackbery vines to more than double our production space this year. Sunday was a great day. the weather was sunny and warm. We picked up a roto-tiller from some friends and proceeded to test it out. Bill dug- in a matter of minutes, two beds about 4 by 25. This years tomato, pepper, potatos and basil beds.

Next step is to put the chickens to work on them. Fertilizer and bug control at the same time.

We live on slightly less than an acre of slightly over sea level ground here in Mud Bay Wash. Just outside of Olympia. We are very near the tidal flats, (this area was formerly called Shitpoke Flats.) In fact there are times when high tides and wet weather have caused the water to run over the road.

We just got back from a visit to an asian women's spa. (www.olympusspa.com) Wow! There were tubs of various temperatures, rooms where you lay down on the floor and the floor surface and the room itself is heated. One of salt, sand and on of mud each hatter than the previous. you can pour mugwort tea over yourself, there is a range of other services, massage, body rubs, body wraps, etc. I am very relaxed!

It has been raining here in Olympia this week, I wonder if it will ever get dry enough to plant the potatos. The chickens have been having mud wrestling sessions. Need to move them tomorrow.

other things that we have planted are doing well. The edamame is growing well now up to 3 inches high. I hope to put up pictures soon.
